Binaural Beats Explained · What They Actually Do (and What They Don't)

Put on headphones. Play 200 Hz in your left ear and 207 Hz in your right ear. Your brain perceives a third tone — the 'binaural beat' — at 7 Hz, the difference between the two. Over time, the brainwaves of the listener tend to drift toward that frequency. This is brainwave entrainment. It is real, it is well-documented, and it is not magic.

The five families

  • Delta (0.5–4 Hz)deep sleep · cellular repair · the gates of the unconscious
  • Theta (4–8 Hz)dream state · deep meditation · creative downloads
  • Alpha (8–13 Hz)relaxed awareness · the gateway to flow
  • Beta (13–30 Hz)alert focus · daytime cognition
  • Gamma (30–100 Hz)peak coherence · 40 Hz used in trauma and Alzheimer research

What the research actually says

The honest version: binaural beats consistently shift subjective state. Meta-analyses find moderate effects on anxiety, focus, and mood. Sleep effects are positive but modest. Claims that binaural beats cure things or replace medication are unsupported. They are a tool — a beautiful, free, accessible one — for nudging the nervous system in a chosen direction. Treat them that way.

Schumann resonance — the planet's own beat

There is a frequency the Earth itself hums at: approximately 7.83 Hz, the Schumann resonance. It sits right at the Theta-Alpha border — exactly where deep meditation lives. Some researchers have proposed that the human brain co-evolved with the Schumann field, which is why this particular tone feels so much like 'coming home'.

Where to begin

Every binaural beat in the Soul in Love Sound Library is a mathematically-generated pure sine wave — no music on top, no third-party artist, no attribution required. Always use headphones (mono speakers cannot produce binaurals). Pick the brainwave that matches what your body is asking for. Notice. Do not push.
