432 Hz vs 440 Hz · The Honest Take on the Tuning Debate
Walk into any sound healing forum and you will find two flavours of certainty: the 432 Hz devotees, who say modern music is tuned to a frequency that subtly damages the soul, and the 432 Hz sceptics, who say the entire claim is internet myth. Both are wrong in different ways. The truth is small, technical, and lovely.
What is being tuned
When people say '432 Hz', they mean tuning A above middle C (also called A4) to 432 cycles per second instead of the modern standard 440 cycles per second. This shifts every other note in the scale by a small amount — roughly 32 cents flat of the standard, or about a third of a semitone.
What history actually shows
Tuning standards have wandered all over the map. Verdi argued for A=432 in 1884. Mozart's instruments survived from c. A=421. Handel's tuning fork from 1751 measured A=423. The standard A=440 was only formalised in 1939 by the International Standards Organisation — and even then, orchestras around the world still drift between A=438 and A=445. So the 'modern music is tuned to 440' claim is technically true, but the implication that 440 has always been the standard is historically false.
Does 432 feel different?
For many sensitive listeners — yes, palpably. The mechanism is debated. One physical hypothesis: 432 Hz produces a slightly more harmonious set of overtones with the Schumann resonance. Another: the slightly slower wave gives the brain a fractionally calmer perceptual signature. A third: the difference is small enough that the listener's expectation accounts for most of the felt effect. All three can be partially true at once.
What we do at Soul in Love
Our pure-sine binaural beats and Soul Mandala tones use precisely the frequencies named — 174, 285, 432, 528, etc. We do not re-tune the entire scale. We sound the named frequency exactly, in cycles per second, and let it carry what it carries. The Twelve-Petal Rose and Soul Mandala include 432 as a distinct petal: the Channel petal, the Heart Bridge.
